- Constitutional Genetics Pre and Post-Natal Requisition
Reports: For chromosome analysis, preliminary results are given in 24-48 hours based on 10 cells for specimens with hematological malignancies and newborns.
Final report turnaround times:
- Chromosome analysis for hematological malignancies - 14 days
- Chromosome analysis of newborns - 7 days
- Chromosome analysis constitutional studies - 28 days
- FISH on blood or bone marrow - 5-7 days
- FISH on FFPE slides - 14 days
- CMA - 30 days
A written report is mailed or faxed to the referring physician at outside hospitals.
Specimen shipping:
Bone marrow – Send in green-top sodium heparin vacutainer. Requires at least 3cc of specimen in a green-topped, sodium heparin vacutainer. Invert tube to mix well. If the appropriate vacutainer is not available, please contact Cytogenetics for alternative instructions. Transport at room temperature.
Paraffin embedded tissue – Submit four slides per probe. Sections should be two microns on plus slides. Also submit an H&E slide with the critical region circled.
Peripheral blood – Chromosome study requires 5-10cc of blood for adult patients and a minimum of 2cc for children. Obtain a venous blood specimen in a green-topped, sodium heparin vacutainer. Invert tube to mix well. If the appropriate vacutainer is not available, please contact Cytogenetics for alternative instructions. Transport at room temperature.
Tumor tissue/other tissue – Tissues should be obtained as soon after removal as possible. Attempt should be made to obtain viable tissue which is free of bacterial contamination. Place the tissue in a sterile container. DO NOT place tissue in formaldehyde or formalin. Transport at room temperature.
CMA – Requires 3-5cc for adults and children over 1 year and 1-2cc for infants. Obtain a venous blood specimen in a lavender top, EDTA vacutainer. Transport at room temperature or at 4 degrees Celsius.
Voided urine, bladder wash – Collect 40-70 cc and immediately transport to lab in a sterile container. Transport at room temperature or at 4 degrees Celsius.
