University of Iowa Diagnostic Laboratories (UIDL) is a high-volume anatomic and clinical pathology reference laboratory affiliated with the Department of Pathology at University of Iowa Health Care.

UIDL supports physicians, hospitals, laboratories, and research organizations nationwide. UIDL specializes in complex, subspecialty diagnostics, delivering expert interpretation and consultative support beyond routine testing.

Our team includes more than 40 board-certified academic pathologists with expertise in autopsy services (including pediatric), bone and soft tissue pathology, dermatopathology, molecular pathology, neuropathology, renal pathology, and surgical pathology (including gynecologic oncology), as part of a broader portfolio of specialized diagnostic services.

UIDL is distinguished by its collaborative, consultative approach to diagnostics. Complex cases are frequently reviewed by multiple subspecialists, ensuring accurate and clinically meaningful interpretations—particularly for cases requiring advanced evaluation beyond what is typically available through high-volume reference laboratories. We are trusted by leading institutions nationwide for this level of diagnostic rigor and expertise.

We offer a comprehensive, clinically focused test menu, including advanced molecular diagnostics, surgical pathology, and consultative services. As a high-volume academic reference laboratory, our model combines operational scale with expert-level interpretation.

Turnaround times vary by test complexity. While many routine services are completed promptly, more complex or consultative cases may require additional time to support thorough evaluation and multidisciplinary review.

UIDL extends the capabilities of a growing academic health system, including Medical Center Downtown in Iowa City, Medical Center North Liberty, Iowa River Landing in Coralville, and regional partnerships such as Mission Cancer + Blood—strengthening collaboration between laboratory medicine and clinical care and enabling seamless integration from diagnosis to treatment.
